Who Hype - 2024

View on YouTube

May 11th at Midnight, GMT.
Two episodes will drop, together, on iPlayer, but also simultaneously worldwide on Disney+
One a week thereafter, also at midnight.

Episodes will then play out on the telly the same night, but it'll meant none-telly watchers will have already seem the episode about 17 hours earlier! Yikes!!
But I guess that's the most logical way to do a worldwide release, nowadays.

First two episodes are on tonight, before Eurovision, but are already up on iPlayer. I watched 'em both last night, as was quite happy with just how much lore Russell managed to squeeze into the show. I knew he wouldn't do a complete clear-out, but I was kinda expecting the first few episodes to go gentle on the lore. .. They didn't!! Russell went hardcore!!
Good stuff

I guess his reasoning was along the lines of "we need to introduce the lore to new viewers, so let's just roll with it."

Thoughts on Who Season 1

I enjoyed it overall.
I felt a lot of the season felt rushed, though, be it because Ncuti was missing for two episodes, one after the other, or because the "hidden baddie" didn't hide for too long, since there were only 8 episodes to play with.
Hopefully by next season they'll be able to play with any arcs a little better, and maybe aim for an arc that gets time to breath rather than feeling..
..
Russell'y?
Or, maybe that's the Russell bit of RTD that I've always felt at odds with. The way he sows seeds through the whole season, and then smushes it all together and sprinkles in a little none-sci-fi to magic his way out of it.
It reminded me a lot of Jesus Shoes, if I'm honest.

But it was still an enjoyable last episode, and I've enjoyed the new Doctor more than most people from what I've read online.
People seemed to hate the more emotional Doctor, but every Doctor's different, and this is his "thing", so I think it's ok.
Be interested to hear everyone else's opinions on the season.

Now the long (so long) wait until Xmas.

Video Commentaries for the season are only 2, which is a shame.. Boom and Empire of Death. I'll be honest, the Empire of Death one dragged on a bit, and was more just 50-odd minutes of Bonnie banging on about how great everything was!!! I actually managed to fall asleep halfway through it! Oops!

Yeah, at first I wasn't too sure about that, but the last episode kinda made it feel very much like that.

Episode One of the 2025 series is now on iPlayer and/or Disney Plus worldwide.

Enjoyed, though it felt a little short. Could've done with a full hour, this week, I think.

Crikey, that was a good episode. Who'd've thought that an episode with Rylan in it would've actually been good!

Thoughts on final episode of Season 2.

1. A very expositional heavy episode again, after last week's similarly heavy episode.
I think Russell's forgotten what made his earliest episodes so special.

2. And then the rest of the episode happened.

Am I the only one who thinks RTD looks like Mr Tumble from that kids show?

Ok, got caught up. I'm wasn't impressed with that season.
It felt a lot like the writers had never even heard of Dr who, nevermind watched any episodes. Bi-generation is not a thing for ANY time lord, which doesn't make sense. It believable that the Dr could because he's the only true time lord and all others are genetically modified based on him. Then there's the whole 'what happened to the time lords' story changed again.. first the planet was destroyed, then only hidden, now time lords were sterilized rather than killed.
Then there is the woke propaganda, it feels like every episode is pushing diversity above telling a story of the day in the life of the smartest alien in the universe. I'm all for characters representing the population accurately, but that should not be more important than the writing.
Then the next doctor reveal.... No reason what so ever for that idea. It doesn't make any sense at all, it's like "oh, that character was popular, let's bring the actor back", no. That's just stupid.

A few things.

1. I think the none-Russell episodes were above and beyond any Who that Russell's written of late. And I say that whilst still believing Russell's been the best show-runner in recent years. I think he just needs to take a step back from the writing, and let others take his ideas and work with them. Which is a shame, because I KNOW Russell's a fantastic writer. But then I keep remembering Jesus Shoes, and going "Oh yeah.. He does do that, doesn't he.."

2. The whole ending was completely rewritten. It wasn't supposed to be like that. They did very late reshoots to completely rewrite a huge chunks of the final episode, and you can kinda see where it happens, midway through.

I think this current "what's happening with Disney Plus" thing is what broke everything down for Ncuti. I believe he was intent on staying, until the "will they/won't they" started happening, and everything had to be put on hold for about a year. Ncuti wanted out, not knowing what was happening, so Russell did a rewrite, they did the regen, etc.

The next doctor was .. .. yeah, it feels very much "hey, you're here, come and do this for us.."

I checked out just before the female doctor.
I have no problem with lead female roles but it didn't seem appropriate to me.

I think Tenant is my favorite.

I think the last few series being poor has nothing to do with the actors, they all could have done a much better job had the writing been better.

Yeah, the series with Jodie weren't bad because of Jodie!!

There were a few really great episodes in the Jodie era, but it's also where the "ecology lesson of the week" stuff started to be hammered into our faces.
In the classic era, it was ok to take time out to do things like that, because it felt like "depth" when inside a 4 or 6 part story. But when you've only got a 45 minute episode, and 20 minutes are "gosh, look what happened to the planet because the people didn't look after it.", it does kinda stick out like a sore thumb.

In the new era, you have to pick your time right. This latest era's had a couple of stand out moments where it was "aah, ok, I see."
The first season's Dot and Bubble ending was .. *chef's kiss*, and this season had that bit in the Doctor Light episode with Ruby. That was also.. .. SO good.
And those little moments, instead of the entire plot being heavy handed. Those worked really well.

Jodie's era wasn't like that, and that's entirely down to the writing.
